{"id":946,"date":"2016-07-06T19:25:59","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T19:25:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/fishcampdc\/?p=831"},"modified":"2022-01-25T07:20:14","modified_gmt":"2022-01-25T07:20:14","slug":"balconies-the-warning-signs-of-structural-issues-part-2-metal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theloopdemo.com\/k2n\/balconies-the-warning-signs-of-structural-issues-part-2-metal\/","title":{"rendered":"Balconies:  The Warning Signs of Structural Issues  (Part 2 \u2013 Metal)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In Part One of this series, we addressed the warning signs of structural damage to concrete balconies.\u00a0 In Part Two, we take a\u00a0look at the metal decking on metal\/concrete mixed media balconies.\u00a0 These installations often add a clean, modern look and feel to buildings such as high rise condominiums.\u00a0 While the combination of concrete and metal materials can be beautiful, they can pose their own structural challenges when not properly maintained.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If any of the indications noted here are present in your building\u2019s balconies, you should bring in a structural engineering professional as soon as possible to investigate.\u00a0 The engineer will be able to recommend appropriate steps needed to repair the damage and mitigate against further deterioration.\u00a0 Once repairs are made, they can certify that the balcony is once again sound and able to bear the load of resident activity for many years to come.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Metal\/Concrete Balconies \u2013 Problem Indicators<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Corrosion.<\/strong>\u00a0Corrosion will show up on metal as staining\/rusting or bubbling.\u00a0 When this occurs, it means that water has penetrated the metal and is beginning to eat away at the material.\u00a0 If unchecked, it can spread to welds and cause them to break apart \u2013 putting the entire balcony structure in jeopardy.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_989\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-989\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theloopdemo.com\/k2n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC03516-300x225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-989\" src=\"http:\/\/theloopdemo.com\/k2n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC03516-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Obvious signs of metal corrosion.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li><strong>Deformation.<\/strong>\u00a0Over time, stress and environmental extremes can cause metal to deform and \u2018bow\u2019. Deformed metal loses its structural integrity, impacting the balcony and any other materials (such as concrete) used in the design.\u00a0 This is a serious issue that should be addressed as quickly as possible.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_990\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-990\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theloopdemo.com\/k2n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC03526-300x225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-990\" src=\"http:\/\/theloopdemo.com\/k2n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC03526-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This photo shows metal deformation. It has clearly bowed outward. There is also a distinct separation between the metal support and the concrete of the balcony.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li><strong>Concrete Cracks.<\/strong> Cracks in concrete are a clear indication that stress and\/or water have undermined the integrity of the material.\u00a0 Depending upon the depth of the cracks, the structure may or may not pose a risk to those using the balcony.\u00a0 In all instances where concrete cracks are visible, immediate evaluation by a structural engineering professional is recommended.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_975\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-975\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theloopdemo.com\/k2n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/03-02-09-018-300x225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-975\" src=\"http:\/\/theloopdemo.com\/k2n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/03-02-09-018-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-975\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here you can see visibly cracked concrete as well as rust and corrosion of the balcony\u2019s metal railing.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li><strong>Metal\/Concrete Separation.<\/strong> In a mixed media balcony using both metal and concrete, the two materials should fit together snugly, with no space for water to leak through.\u00a0 When gaps appear between the metal and the concrete, it can be a sign of serious structural issues impacting areas immediately visible as well as those underlying the structure itself.\u00a0 A structural engineer will need to look at balconies above and below to see where the structural impact is coming from and to determine how badly the concrete underlayment may be affected.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_991\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-991\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theloopdemo.com\/k2n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSCN3313-300x225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-991\" src=\"http:\/\/theloopdemo.com\/k2n\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSCN3313-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-991\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This shows a very large separation between the concrete and metal balcony supports.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li><strong>Broken Welds<\/strong>. When it comes to metal balconies, it doesn\u2019t get much more serious than broken welds.
